Julia Louis-Dreyfus uses ChatGPT to write acceptance speech, goes as expected

Julia Louis-Dreyfus brought AI into the spotlight during her recent acceptance speech, and the outcome was pure hilarity.

The 62-year-old comedian and actress graced the stage at the WSJ. Magazine Innovator Awards, where she was recognized as the evening’s entertainment honoree. She shared with the audience at the Museum of Modern Art that she had enlisted ChatGPT to craft her speech.

The AI chatbot had some entertaining mix-ups—it confused “innovator” with “investor,” mistook Louis-Dreyfus for Julia Roberts, and humorously claimed that Jaws actor Richard Dreyfuss was her grandfather.

Louis-Dreyfus kickstarted her speech with ChatGPT’s suggested lines, blending in the mishaps for a comical start. “Ladies and gentlemen, esteemed guests and fellow investors, today is a moment of profound gratitude and reflection for me as I accept the great honor of being recognized as the investor of the year by Wall Street Journal,” she began, causing laughter and applause from the audience.

Dressed in a black Prada dress with a white ruffle trim, Louis-Dreyfus continued amidst the amusement, expressing appreciation for the support she’s received, sprinkled with the AI-induced mix-ups.

As the AI-produced segment ended, she quipped about AI’s expanding role, humorously suggesting they might soon take over more tasks. Louis-Dreyfus then emphasized the importance of human innovation and entertainment, wrapping up her speech with gratitude toward the audience and WSJ. Magazine.

In a separate interview for the November cover story celebrating her as the entertainment innovator of the year, the Seinfeld star candidly discussed her health journey. She recounted the moment she learned about her stage 2 breast cancer diagnosis in 2017, humorously likening it to a “horrible black comedy” before transitioning into emotional reflection.

Louis-Dreyfus, who announced her cancer-free status in October 2018 after undergoing treatments, shared insights into her perspective on life and mortality, acknowledging the unexpectedness of facing such health challenges.
